I’m glad the year of the rabbit is now over. 2011 brought us a lot of work, both for school and the house. I’m just glad that we survived and are now able to say, we did it.
As of today, we entered the year of the Dragon. The last time when it was the year of the dragon was when I left Asia and came to this country. I was hopeful, ambitious, and determined to make a living on my own. I wanted to be independent. Leaving home for education and a better future was the only thing occupied my mind. 12 years later I find myself moving in with my parents. I have never missed home during Chinese new year than this year. I suddenly feel like things do come in some sort of circular format or pattern. The word, 家, jumped at me several times today. I realized what an awful and selfish son I have been, being so far away from where I came from. Distance makes the heart grow fonder. I sometimes think coming to Canada was a healthy way for me to resolve family matters. I feel like leaving home forced me to re-discover myself, re-learn how to be a responsible human being, and re-evaluate the ethics I was taught growing up in a completely different culture and society.
Today wasn’t a very productive school work wise day, but I was busy doing things throughout the day. Made a few calls about works around the house that needed to get done. Got really sucked in the book, Paranoia, that I’m reading. Ran the Elk Lake 10k with Holly. Dinner date with Kassie and Landon was cheerful. We went to Dynasty in Chinatown for dinner and played Bloom Blox on Wii at my house. Holly was really pumped to see Zuma, and I’m sure Holly told Zuma about the wildest weekend of her life in their own doggie language. It was a really pleasant way to start the first day of the new year! I have a lot of things to look forward to this year such as moving into Crownwood, the arrival of dragon babies: little Martin, Wong, Stretch, and Bowen so far, my parents’ visit in June, closing of my thesis, and lots and lots of road trips with Anya and Holly! I’m hopeful that 2012 will be a great year.
Kassie asked us to check out this video, and we were simply amazed.
